One-Day Roofing Shingle Repair in Just 11 Steps
One-day roofing shingle repair may seem like a daunting prospect, especially if you aren’t especially skilled at home repairs. However, when broken down into simple steps, it couldn’t be simpler.
1. Remove Current Shingles
At the risk of stating the obvious, before installing new shingles, the old ones need to be removed. In addition, you’ll need to remove the nails and underlayment. The easiest way to do this is with a roofing shovel, which is specially designed for the job.
2. Clear Off Miscellaneous Debris
After removing the shingles, make sure to scan your roof for stray felt fasteners and nails. All of those need to come off before installing new shingles. Sweep the roof free of debris, you’ll get the best results with a stiff-bristled broom.
3. Inspect the Roof Deck
This is the perfect opportunity to give your roof deck a brief inspection. Look for water damage, unevenness, warping, or similar damage. You will have to pause installation to repair any issues, but you’ll save yourself money and heartache in the process.
4. Install Drip Edges
Start installing the drip edges. Leave about a half-inch gap between the bottom of the drip edge’s kicker and the fascia board. Attach the drip edge with 1 and ¼-inch roofing nails. This doesn’t need to be precise. What’s most important is they’re correctly aligned and spaced away from the fascia board by about an inch.
5. Install Underlayment
If you’ve never installed felt paper before, this can be a tricky step, so be prepared to take your time. The goal is to have an even covering between shingles and roof sheathing. If you have a large roof, follow the underlayment packaging instructions on how to stagger the sections to cover more. This is often the most time-consuming step for new roofers and needs to be done right, so take your time.
6. Install the First Row of Shingles
The first row of shingles is sometimes called the starter strip. These should overhang the drip edge by about half an inch. Make sure to measure the height of your shingles and mark a line on the underlayment where the top edge needs to be. Otherwise, you won’t get the half-inch overlap and your shingles won’t rest properly. You may need to trim your starter course to get the tar strip as close to the edge as possible.
7. Mark the Next Rows
This step will make installing the remaining shingles much easier. Use your chalk line to snap out a grid with six-inch horizontal and five-inch vertical spacing. This makes it easier to nail down the remaining shingles while ensuring the right amount of overlap and exposure.
8. Install Remaining Courses
As you install the remaining shingles, you’ll notice some will need to be cut to achieve the right horizontal offset. You can cut these as you go or do them all at once before starting, depending on your preference. Nail the shingles to the roof with roofing nails, following the packaging instructions.
Generally, four nails are all that’s needed, but some roofers recommend using as many as six. Since there’s such a risk for high wind and storms in Florida, we’d recommend more nails over fewer. However many are used, make sure the next shingles overlap the nail heads by at least one inch.
9. Install Shingles Around Structures
There is no easy trick, unfortunately, to installing shingles around vents, chimneys, or skylights. Cut the shingles to size and use a bit of roofing cement to secure them to odd-shaped edges. Make sure to not leave any spaces, especially around ridge vents.
10. Install Ridge Cap Shingles
Next, install the ridge shingles. Each manufacturer has special instructions for their model so follow them for the best results. Generally speaking, you’ll want to cut the shingles into pieces long enough to overlap. They should overlap the top course on each side of the roof by five inches. The built-in tar strip should be facing across the ridge for the ridge cap shingles. That is to say, it should be facing perpendicular to the direction it faces the rest of the shingles.
11. Cleanup
You’re almost done! All that’s left is cleanup. If you rented a dumpster and put down tarps, this should be as simple as hauling everything away.
